The Colour of the Wind

The colour of the wind is forever changing.

As quoted from A walk to Remember, Mandy Moore says, love is like the wind, I cannot see it but I feel it.

To me this is a great example of the colour of the wind. I think it is our moods and attitude that dictate the colour of the wind to ourselves and influences the way we see and interpret each and every day.

On a sad miserable winter’s day, I think the colour of the wind is grey. On a crisp autumn morning the colour of the wind is burnt orange, on a peaceful spring morning the colour of the wind is green and pink and on a hot summers day I hope there is wind! If there is wind it would definitely be yellow and red!

However, if I am in a sad mood on a hot summer’s day, the colour of the wind would not be yellow and orange it would be grey because I would be seeing the wind according to my mood and feelings and not the way it should be.

Only those with imaginative and creative minds can really see the true colours of the wind.

Watch This Space

On Saturday night Andy and I were hungry so we decided to ordered Butlers Pizza, they told me it would take 2 hours to deliver as they only had 5 drivers and they were really busy. I told them I would collect it as we were starving and didn't want to wait another 2 hours before we ate.

About an hour later we tried calling them, but both their numbers were off the hook, we must have tried calling for at least 20 minutes. We then decided to go to Buttlers to see if our pizzas were ready.

When we arrived there were about 30 pizzas waiting ontop of the oven and 4 teenage staff members doing nothing but sitting on their cellphones and looking pretty! When I enquired about our pizza they told me it was ready and cold so we received a 25% discount.

When I asked them why they hadn't called me they just ignored my question. I told them they shouldn't leave their phones off the hook which was really annoying since we were hungry and couldnt get through to them, they never responded to this question either!

This left me with such a bad impression of Butler's Pizza and I am reluctant to order from them again! I hope businesses realise that customer relationships are imperative and that it is far easier and cheaper to keep an existing customer then it is to find new ones!

Watch this space, I am not done with Buttler's, Hello Peter, here I come...

If I were the boss…

If I were the boss I would like to be chilled and relaxed! Yet I know I am sure I would be strict, evil and everyone would hate me! No I am only kidding!!

If I were the boss I would want to have patients, understanding, be a good leader, lead from example and oh, did I mention have patients?

I would start work late…and of cause end early! We would have a T.V room where all sports and news could be watched. Meetings and other “house work” would be conducted in a relaxed manner, not at a board room table, but rather on beanbags and pillows!

I think on Fridays we would end work extra early, but not before we all enjoyed an ice cold bear! I would never give my employees “homework” as long as they completed all their tasks during working hours! I wouldn’t mind what my employees wore to work or how they presented themselves! All I would care about was the standard and commitment of their work!

I would insist on having a gym at work, it is the best time to exercise and let off all your steam and get all your frustrations off your chest! I would insist on all employees taking a lunch time brake as well as two tea brakes a day!

I would be a very approachable boss… my door would always be open! I would also be very encouraging and advice friendly.

But I guess if I were the boss of this organisation it probably wouldn’t last very long!!!!

Designer PR

I have realised from the “Designer PR” blog that it is important as PR students that we should carry our own brand of PR and not live in the shadows of marketing and advertising. The move from Commerce to Design and Information could really open new doors not only for PR students but also for the industry. We should maximise this opportunity to our advantage. This is the first year that PR is under the Design faculty and therefore we should start out fresh, there are no boundaries and limitations, we can set them.

Since we are in 4h year, PR might seem monotonous and boring to some, but it is up to us to make it fun again, but not only by seeing the business side of PR but also seeing the exciting side which would lead us to thinking more creatively and out of the box.

As mentioned in the article, I agree that it is important for us as up and coming PR practitioners to learn and benefit from all social media’s including Face book, My space, Blogger and Twitter amongst others because of the technology age where we find ourselves.

I am excited to be a part of face lifting PR and feel like this is an opportunity to make PR something great.

South African Bands Suck?

Do I agree with the statement? Absolutely not! I think that South African music has reached new heights these past few years and that is mainly owing to the talent and aspiration of our local performers.

We have such a large variety of bands and just off the top of my head I could list a few which stand out to me…Flat Stanley, the Dirty Skirts, the Beams, Goldfish and Watershed. But the band that stands out to me the most as far as accomplishments are concerned is Freshly Ground.

Freshly Ground has been around since 2002. The fact that they are a multiracial band highlights their exclusive originality and diversity as a whole, not to mention their unique afro jazz music which has allowed this band to gain publicity and recognition for their music in just seven short years.Freshly Ground is not only renowned and loved in South Africa. They have a large following overseas and have travelled and performed in Japan, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Germany. A few of their many accomplishments include opening for Robbie Williams' South African tour in 2006 as well as winning the Best African Act Award at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Copenhagen in 2006. Last year Freshly Ground won four SAMA awards including Album of the Year, Duo / Group, Engineer and Adult Contemporary Album.

This brings me to my next point, for a country that has only been a democracy for merely 15 years I feel that our music industry is not just in a great place but is booming too. The fact that we have our own music awards to celebrate the success of our artists highlights the rapid pace at which bands and artists are producing music of such high quality. Last year we celebrated the 14th Annual South African Music Awards which recognises the accomplishments of both groups and individuals in this industry.

Another point I would like to raise is that so often when famous singers and bands come from overseas to perform in South Africa, it is our local bands which open for them on the night, giving our bands great exposure and allowing the overseas artists to see the incredible talent these South African bands posses.

But, Freshly Ground is just one example of many of our bands who have excelled in their prespective division of our ever increasing music industry. I feel that we as South Africans should not only encourage our artists with continuous support, but be proud of their achievements and celebrate their successes with them.
